This image by Shūbun, painted in 1418, depicts the Zen ideal of meditation and study inspired by nature. The sage’s hut is surrounded by three auspicious trees — the Three Friends of Winter: pine, bamboo and plum — symbolizing perseverance, integrity and humility. Back in 2005 this image inspired our name, Studio Zero. Our mission is to be a virtual equivalent of the studio in this painting.
